Cherry, Japanese Flowering

The Japanese Flowering Cherry Tree, also commonly called Oriental Cherry, typically reaches heights between 20 and 35 feet. In Japan, where the tree originates from, it is referred to as Sakura, which means “tree on which god sits” and symbolizes spring, life and beauty. Having a weeping form and spectacular blossoms, the Japanese Flowering Cherry is at the top of the list of spectacular weeping trees. For best growth, the tree should be planted in well-drained soil with full sun. It is very tolerant of different pH levels as well as drought.

The broad, alternate, simple LEAVES are ovate shape and usually 2-5” long. The tip of leaf is long and pointy while the base is rounded. The edges are serrate and both sides of the leaf are smooth. In the fall the radiant dark green leaves turn a bronze to red color. When crushed, the leaves give of a distinct odor.

In April, white to pink colored FLOWERS appear before or with the emergence of the leaves. The flowers are 1/2-2 1/2” across and cover the stems in a dense and showy manner.

The FRUIT from this tree comes in the form of a one-seeded black drupe. The outer layer of the fruit is fleshy while the inner layer is as hard as a stone. The SEEDS are almost spherical in shape.

Wood from the Japanese Flowering Cherry can be used to smoke meat, and leaves can be used in different foods, such as cakes.
