Maple, Florida

Florida Maple is the southeastern relative of Northern Sugar Maple (which has larger leaves) and is often classed as a variety of that species. The two intergrade where their ranges meet. Unlike Sugar Maples, Florida Maples are not tapped commercially for sugar.It thrives in full sun and likes wet soil conditions. A rapid growing tree that provides a dramatic color change during the fall for residents of the Deep South.

The LEAF is Opposite, simple, orbicular in shape, 1 1/2 to 3 1/2 inches in length and width, entire margin with 3 or 5 somewhat rounded lobes, green above, paler and often fuzzy below. The leaves of the Florida Maple remain on the tree for extended periods of time.

The FLOWER is Yellow-green, small, hanging from a long (1 to 2 inches) stalk in clusters of a few flowers, appearing with the leaves. The BARK is light gray and smooth, becoming darker, thicker, and more furrowed as the tree matures.

The FRUIT is double-winged Samara, about 3/4 inch long, spreading at about 65 degrees (wider than sugar maple) which matures in the mid-summer. Birds eat the seeds during the late spring. This tree is of little value as a timber species, but it makes an excellent shade tree. It is a source of maple sugar.
