Crepe Myrtle

The Common Crapemyrtle tree typically reaches heights between 15 and 25 feet with spreads much the same. Generally this small tree grows multi-stemmed and is used as a medium sized shrub. The foliage grows at the top of the tree while the bottom is usually leafless, which shows off the bark. The canopy is a symmetrical vase shape, although variation is not abnormal. For best growth, the tree should be planted in rich, moist soil with full sun.

The opposite (can be upper alternate, or in whorls also), simple, pinnate LEAVES are 1-2 1/2” in length and about 1” wide. Each leaf is obovate to oval in shape with a rounded base. When the leaves first appear they are a yellowish green, reddish purple color, but as they mature they turn a radiant dark green. In the fall, the leaves turn red, orange and yellow before dropping.

During the summer perfect, white, pink, purple and red FLOWERS appears in 3-8” long panicles. Each flower is 1- 1 1/2” wide and has 6 petals.

The FRUIT on the Crapemyrtle comes in the form of brown capsules. The 6-valved capsules are 1/2” wide and 1/3” long and persist through winter. The SEEDS have a winged apex and are 3/8” long.

The smooth, gray, thin BARK is exfoliating and exposes a pale surface, ranging in colors from gray to brown. The TWIGS are smooth.

Aphids and powdery mildew are two common problems associated with the Common Crapemyrtle. The leaves from this tree have been ground and made into a tea, which is thought to regulate blood sugar levels. The wood from this tree is also greatly valued.
