Chitalpa

The Chitalpa is a cross between Catalpa bignonioides and Chilopsis linearis. Like the Chilopsis linearis, known as a Desert Willow, the Chitalpa can stand dry heat, but it can also stand temperatures falling below zero degrees. This tree typically does not reach heights above 20 feet and is generally multi-stemmed.

The bright green, oblong shaped LEAVES range from 3-5” long and around 1” wide. Elliptical in shape, each leaf has a pointed apex and base.

In late spring, clusters of frilly shaped pinkish-purple FLOWERS with yellow throats bloom. The flowers drop in the fall but provide nectar while in bloom which attracts hummingbirds.

The tree is sterile so it produces no seedpods.

The fast growing nature of the tree causes the BARK to crack. The TRUNK splits near its base into several branches. The ascending BRANCHES form an oval crown.

Infestation by aphids and thrips represent common problems associated with this tree. There are no common hazards towards animals associated with this tree.
