Chinese parasol tree

The Chinese Parasol tree typically reaches heights between 30 and 45 feet with spreads half of the height. The rounded crown casts a very dense shadow making this tree a good option if looking for a shade tree. For best growth, plant tree in moist, sandy or loam soil with full sun.

The alternate, simple LEAVES grow 6-8” in length and normally have 3 lobes (although 5 lobes is not uncommon). The leaf is a rich green color and the underside of the leaf can either be smooth or covered in tiny hairs. The base of the leaf has the shape of the top of a heart. Due to the very large width of the leaves, 10-20”, the tree has a tropical appearance.

The leathery FRUITS are attached to the leafy carpels. Shortly after the tree flowers, the pea-sized, globular fruits split open into 5 leaf-like seed bearing bodies. When the follicle bursts, the black/brown fluid that surrounds the fruit is released.

In June or July, yellow-green FLOWERS bloom in 10-20” long, pubescent panicles at the terminal end of the branches. The monoecious flowers have no petals but have petal-like calyxes. Butterflies, bees and other insects are attracted to the flowers.

The smooth BARK and STEMS are a beautiful green color.

Seeds from this tree can make a snack when toasted. Other parts of the tree have been used for their medicinal properties. The roots can be used in a treatment to reduce swelling and the leaves in a treatment for sores.
